Beyond Ourselves Devotional
Beyond
Ourselves is a book by Catherine Marshall. This book had a huge impact on my
life and I have read and reread it a couple of times. When my daughter asked
for some guidance on how to spend time in the Word, I decided to write
devotionals for her. Little did I know that the journey in creating devotionals
for her, would take me into waters testing my own faith and beliefs.
I
decided to base the devotionals on this precious book, as this book in itself
is such a treasure. Thus, using the book as a guide, we delve into the issues
addressed in the book, in deeper detail, with the Bible as reference.
It
is an ongoing work – sometimes completing one week of devotionals can take up
to 3 months to complete! This is simply because of the research and prayer and
waiting and searching for answers to new questions involved.
It
is also by no means a definitive work. It is evolving, growing and changing as
new revelations and understanding come to light. Thus, already posted works are
always subject to change!
How to use it
Every
week covers a chapter in the book. Reading the chapter will give you the
context on which the devotionals are based. Every week has challenges for you
to address different areas for your life, that connects with the context of the
week’s devotionals.
Every
day addresses a new topic, aligned with the context for the week. Scriptures
are listed that need to be read before the devotional is studied. The
devotionals themselves can differ greatly in length, as it depends on the
subject it addresses.
These
devotionals are not 5-minute-soothe-your-conscience-devotionals. They are
in-depth studies and will require anything from 15minutes to an hour of your
time, depending on your engagement.
It
is meant not only to teach, but to open up the conversation between you and God
about the matters it covers. What you get from it, may differ greatly from what
I got from it! And you may not even agree with me, having read the scriptures
and studied the topic by yourself. Your path and understanding looks different
to mine – allow God to teach you, as He is the only one who really
can.
