John 14:6

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The obvious implication of this verse is that Jesus is the only way to get to the Father. Let’s take a look at this verse from different angles.

W-analysis:

Who: Jesus, him=Thomas, the Father

Where: Jerusalem

What: a declaration

When: Before the feast of Passover, when supper was ended

Why: Jesus told the disciples he was going to prepare a place for them. Thomas asked how they should know the way if they don’t even know where Jesus was going.

How: Speech

Definitions:

  1. The way: 1. a method, style, or manner of doing something; an optional or alternative form of action. 2. a road, track, or path for travelling along.

A manner of doing things, and/or a road, a direction, in which to move.

  1. The truth: the quality or state of being true, that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality, a fact or belief that is accepted as true.

Certain things are true, whether you believe them or not (like gravity) and you can have truths because you believe it (eating green apples will make you lose weight, it worked for you, so you believe it)

  1. The life: the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.

Life on earth has a certain end: death. And then there is an after-life: that what is after your physical dies.

Other implications of what is said in the verse:

  • Jesus mentions Himself and the Father. This refers then to the godhead: Jesus – the Son, God - the Father and the Holy Ghost.

  • Then Jesus said, that no man cometh unto the Father, but by Him. This begs the question: why is it important to go the Father? It suggests that ultimately our goal is to be with the Father, not with Jesus. Jesus is how we get to the Father.

  • Jesus mentions that He is 3 things. And because He is those 3 things, we can approach the Father.

Other observations about the verse:

  • Jesus mentions 3 things. The number 3 has great significance in nature and in the Bible. Three is the smallest number we need to create a pattern. It signifies the strongest shape: the triangle. A pattern of 3 is easier to remember than 2 or 4. Physical matter comes in 3 states: solid, liquid and gas. In the Bible, a lot of things consist of 3: the godhead (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), the temple (outer court, holy place, holies of holy), 3 heavens, Jesus rose on the third day, we are body, soul and spirit. The number 3 signifies completion and harmony.

Let’s look at some other scriptures:

John 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

1 Tim 2:4 - Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.,

John 4:24 - God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 11:25 - Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Col 1: 15-17 - Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Col 2:9 - For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

John 10:9 - I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

John 10:30 -  I and my Father are one.

Heb 4:16 - Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Let’s bring it together:

Jesus was telling the disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them in the Father’s house. And that when He comes again, he will take them with Him to this house. And then Jesus told them that they know where He was going, and that they know how to get there. Thomas then said that they don’t know where He is going, so how would they know how to get there? And Jesus answered by telling Thomas that He was the how to get to the where.

Ultimately, we want to get to heaven, to enter into the city of Rev 21 and 22. To get to heaven, you need to be saved. And you can only get saved by one thing: Jesus.

The Father is the judge, the almighty, in whom there is no darkness at all. For us to be able to approach the Father (whether here on earth in prayer or in heaven), we have to go through Jesus – the blood He shed on the cross is what makes us clean, sanctified to stand before the throne.

You cannot get saved without Jesus.

Jesus is God, the first and the last. If you don’t accept Jesus, you don’t accept the Father. The difference between our faith and others, is Jesus. All faiths have a god. Only ours have Jesus. To get to the true God, to be allowed into the new city, the new earth, you have to go through Jesus. He is the tree of life. If He is the truth, it also means that if He is not in the faith, it is a lie.

In John 10 Jesus tells of the shepherd, and the sheep. That if anyone uses not the door (Jesus) to get to the sheep (us), they are thieves. Anyone who does not preach Jesus, is a thief. Trying to steal the souls of men, not save them.

There is no other way into heaven, but through Jesus. You cannot go to heaven, but through Jesus.

If you don’t believe that Jesus died for you, that He rose from the dead and lives, you cannot be saved. If you believe in heaven and God, but not in Jesus, you cannot be saved.

The veil in the Holy of Holies tore when Jesus died. He was the final sacrifice and because of Him, we can now approach God directly. He is the only way, the perfect way, to get to the Father.
